Our History
Our company has had many encounters with various Japanese traditional craftsmanship as a production of Japanese-style modern lightings. In order to meet the requirements of our clients, the lighting makers, we have worked together with the craftsmen to learn how to make the products and how to create the shapes they are looking for. In the process, we have been fascinated by the beauty of the traditional Japanese product, and fallen in love with the craftsman's skills, even moved by the history of the craftmanship with stories and thoughts that have led to the Japanese traditional crafts in current state.
Beginning of the project
On the other hand, I learnt that the current situation of traditional crafts industry is facing difficult time. Most of traditional crafts are suffering from declining demand, ageing craftsmen and a lack of successors.
We would like to convey the status of such traditional crafts industry to people overseas and encourage them to incorporate the beauty and precision of traditional crafts into their interior spaces. By doing so, we hope to contribute to making somewhat motivation of Japanese traditional craftsman lively again.

Japanese traditional arts and crafts that make up the Japanese space are modularized and cut out.
Shoin-zukuri is said to be the basis of Japanese residential architecture and was established as an architectural style suited to the life of samurai warriors as far back as the Muromachi period (1336-1573).
It is composed of simple, yet highly skilled traditional craftsmen's masterpieces such as sliding doors, partitions and tokonoma (alcove), symbolising wabi-sabi, which are spatial elements fused with nature and necessity.
Kukanzai extract the gist of the architectural materials, furniture, tools, and clothings that make up the atmosphere of living with a shoin-zukuri residential architecture, and offer them as modules. They wouldmake it possible to fuse traditional Japanese elements into contemporary living spaces. The modules can be used as stand-alone components or in free combination with other modules as key elements to create a Japanese spatial atmosphere.
